Johan Andreas Schioldann
MD(Copenhagen), DMS(Odense), Dip Psychiatry (Copenhagen), FRANZCP
Title: Professor
Position: Clinical Professor of Psychiatry

Prof. Schioldann's main research areas are pathography (psychobiography), the history of psychiatry, psychopathology, medical bibliography, and bibliography on famous people in history. He has authored/edited several important works within these areas:

In 1978, he re-edited Viggo Christiansen's pathography from 1906 on King Christian VII (George III's cousin) (Odense University Press). For nearly all of his reign (1766-1806), one of the most prolonged and momentous in Danish history, he was insane, probably suffering from schizophrenia. – In the same year, he re-edited K. Pontoppidan's [Memory of Woe of the Sixth Mental Department] ] from 1897 (Odense University Press). It deals with a fierce anti-psychiatric debate that took place in the 1890s in Denmark and has been of considerable importance to the subsequent organization and running of psychiatric hospital services in Denmark. - Schioldann's DMS thesis (Odense University, 1983; abbreviated English editions, Odense University Press, 1988; History of Psychiatry, 1996) gained him international recognition within the field of political leadership and manic-depressive illness studies: The Life of D. G. Monrad (1811-1887). Manic-Depressive Disorder and Political Leadership. In the fateful period for Denmark, around 1864, Monrad became Prime Minister. He led Denmark into the disastrous Danish-German War (Bismarck) in 1864, thereby forfeiting a peaceful resolution of the Schleswig-Holstein question, one of the most complicated that has occupied European diplomacy. Denmark lost Schleswig-Holstein and Lauenburg, i.e. two fifths of her territory and one third of her population. This pathography provides a rare occasion to elucidate the psychopathology of mild to moderate manic-depressive illness and its potential to adversely affect the course of history. Schioldann has demonstrated that the often disputed pathographical method is indispensable to both psychiatric and historical research.

In 1986, he published Famous and Very Important Persons. Medical, Psychological, Psychiatric Bibliography, 1960-1984 (Odense University Press). (Vol. 2.: 1985-1999, [2005]).

In 1994, he re-edited (with Kurt Sørensen) (Acta Historica Scientiarum Naturalium Et Medicinalium Vol. 41. Danish National Library of Science and Medicine) Thomas Bartholin's On Diseases in the Bible , 1672 (translated from Latin by James Willis), a medical miscellany of subjects from the Bible and the Talmud. Bartholin's famous treatise is one of first works in the field of Biblical medical historiography.

In 1993, Schioldann authored a ‘Classic Text' to History of Psychiatry, on historical aspects of psychogenic psychoses.

In 1996, he co-authored Professor Erik Strömgren's bio-bibliography ( Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica ).

In 1999, he was ‘Invited Guest Editor' of ‘John Cade's seminal lithium paper turns fifty' in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica .

In 2001 followed his: In Commemoration of the Centenary of the Death of Carl Lange. The Lange Theory of ‘Periodical Depressions'. A Landmark in the History of Lithium Therapy (Adelaide Academic Press) . This book sheds new light on the history of mood disorders and the early use of lithium in psychiatry, especially by Carl Lange and his brother, Fritz Lange, eminent figures in Danish medicine.

In 2002, Schioldann edited an interview by Mogens Schou of the Danish psychiatrist, Professor Erik Strömgren, “one of world psychiatry's greatest figures” who, in the words of Norman Sartorius “made psychiatry a respectable part of medicine” (Adelaide Academic Press).

The same year, Goldney and Schioldann published Pre-Durkheim Suicidology, based on the 1892 reviews of Daniel Hack Tuke and George H. Savage of suicide in Tuke's Dictionary of Psychological Medicine, Goldney and Schioldann expressing the view that Durkheim has been given unwarranted prominence as the founder of scientific suicide research (Adelaide Academic Press).

In 2003 followed Schioldann's translation into English with introduction of August Wimmer's classic monograph on psychogenic psychoses (Adelaide Academic Press) . As Strömgren wrote: “Wimmer's book probably gave the best description of these psychoses ever written – surely one of the most outstanding contributions to Scandinavian psychiatry [and ] it would have been of epoch-making importance internationally had it been translated into a world language”. “That it did not eventuate”, he said, “is probably the most essential explanation for the great difference there exists in this field between Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon psychiatry. – It may well be that most of the controversies within our field [that of psychogenic psychoses] could have been avoided had [Wimmer's] monumental work been translated into English soon after its first publication in 1916”. - In the opinion of Berrios of Cambridge, Wimmer's book provided a new understanding of psychogenesis in detail and at a level of historical argument unsurpassed to this very day, concluding that in this book, Wimmer makes a case for psychogenesis that has not yet been answered by modern psychiatry.

In 2004 Schioldann edited with introduction M. Winther's Bibliotheca Danorum Medica, Copenhagen 1832 (Adelaide Academic Press). This book is an important contribution to medical bibliography, providing the historian with easy access to Danish medical literature, especially through the 17th and 18th centuries, when many Danish medical scientists secured the reputation of Danish medicine in Europe.
